In this first event of the Climate Deep Dialogue you will hear a lecture from a leading expert in the field of climate science and leave with a clear roadmap of where we are in the climate crisis and possible future pathways. \nThe keynote speaker for this lecture will be Mark Maslin\, a Professor of Earth System Science at University College London and Natural History Museum of Denmark. He is a leading scientist with an expertise in past global and regional climatic change and humanity’s impact on our planet. Maslin has published over 190 papers and regularly comments on international and national climate change policies. He has written over 70 popular articles in the New Scientist\, The Times\, and Guardian\, among others\, and often appears on television and radio. His recent public talks include talks at Twitter\, Google\, the Royal Geographical Society\, Tate Modern\, UNFCCC COP\, the WTO and the Universities of Oxford\, Cambridge\, and Harvard. Maslin has written 10 popular books\, including “Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction (2021)” and “How to Save Our Planet: The Facts (2021)”. \nThis Deep Dialogue series – Beyond COP: Is It Time to Change Course? – is held in support of the charitable mission of the English-Speaking Union. Every ticket sold will help the English-Speaking Union in its work to give young people the speaking and listening skills and cultural understanding they need to thrive. \nEvent Timings: \n6:00 – 6:30pm | Arrival \n6:30 – 7:30pm | Lecture \n7:30 – 8:30pm | Drinks \n8:30pm | Close \nFurther Information About the Series \nBeyond COP: Is It Time to Change Course? \nWe are in the midst of an existential climate crisis\, from extreme weather and ecosystem decline to biodiversity loss and crop failure. Climate change is also compounding inequality and has the potential to drive significant unrest if we fail to act now. \nIn the aftermath of COP 27 we have the opportunity to consider: Is our current approach enough to deal with the climate crisis or is it time to change course? \nIn this Climate Deep Dialogue we will explore this question and hear from scientists\, academics\, activists\, politicians and entrepreneurs. We invite you to join us for a provocative\, challenging\, engaging and inspiring series of events\, which will focus on finding the solutions to make radical progress on the climate crisis. The host of the FIF moves between different ESUs internationally and each forum centres around a topic selected by the hosting nation. \nThe topic of this fourth FIF\, hosted by our Polish colleagues\, will be: ‘What motivates us to promote public speaking in our respective countries?’ \nThe ESU has always been a conduit to share and exchange views\, but within the wider international family of the ESU there is more that can be done! It is our hope that FIF will bring the international members of the ESU closer together and lead us all in exciting directions as we listen and learn from one other. \nDate: Monday\, 13 June 2022\, 1pm BST \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86471211392?pwd=MXNOR3Awa3R2OGZkUG1xTWFpcFluUT09 \nMeeting passcode: AYdPG3 \nPlease see below for a message from Alina\, Chair of ESU Poland: \nDear ESU members\, inspired by the 3rd FIF hosted by Dominga Chamorro representing Chile\, we would like you to take you to a different corner of the world\, Poland – so far away\, yet so close. \nAs is the case with the countries we have not visited\, the associations may be limited to famous people\, events or even stereotypes\, often confused with those of our neighbours. Visiting a country\, however\, often changes the perspective. Poland has always been considered a hospitable place\, but also a community in which two people may have three contradicting opinions\, according to an old joke. We have weaknesses and virtues\, but public speakers we are not. This shortcoming may result from the character of our educational system\, only now gradually shifting the main focus from knowledge to skills\, or may be rooted elsewhere. Yet\, since 1999 we have not missed an International Public Speaking Competition and our young speakers make us proud and happy. \nThe meeting to which we would like to invite you will be hosted by this year’s winner of the National Finals in Poland – Julia Smuczynska and her sister Sara\, who represented Poland at the International Public Speaking Competition in 2011 and is now one of the organizers. The question we would like to ask ourselves and each other is what motivates us to promote public speaking in our respective countries. DESCRIPTION:Exploring the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views\, Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. She will be joined by Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nEvent summary:\n‘Are some born to be better and more civil public speakers?’ Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. \nHannah explores the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views. Numerous scholars are now investigating how the different profiles of brains are associated with different ideologies. It is claimed that the brains of those with very conservative views have a much larger volume and a much more sensitive amygdala – the area of the brain that is involved in perceptions of fear. Those of more liberal inclination seem to have a greater weighting on the region of the brain that is engaged with future planning and more collaborative endeavour. Liberals look to the future and seem less sensitive to immediate threats. This leads to questions about how neuroscience might affect how we change our minds and go about winning an argument. The study has\, therefore\, key implications for those working on questions of civility\, persuasiveness\, and divisiveness in public discourse\, suggesting that the way in which we build up perceptions of the world strengthens the way in which we ignore contrary views and evidence. \nA discussion will follow led by our distinguished panel guests Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nChaired by ESU Chair\, Professor James Raven\, the debate and Q&A session will take place via Zoom on Wednesday\, 23 September at 7.30pm (BST). \nReserve your ticket here: https://civilpublicspeakers.eventbrite.co.uk \n  \n  \n  URL:https://www.esu.org/event/online-event-are-some-born-to-be-better-and-more-civil-public-speakers/ LOCATION:Zoom Webinar CATEGORIES:ESU Education,ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Exterior-of-Dartmouth-House-copy-scaled.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20200621 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20200622 DTSTAMP:20250320T105445 CREATED:20191129T102205Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200316T105738Z UID:5438-1592697600-1592783999@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Grand Final of the ESU Performing Shakespeare at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon DESCRIPTION:We regret that this event has been postponed until further notice.
