DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union invites you to join us at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe for the Grand Final of the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition on Friday\, 14 June. The Performing Shakespeare Competition is a chance for schools across the country to practice their oracy and drama skills. Schools have been competing in heats across the country to secure a place in the grand final at the San Wanamaker Playhouse. \nPlease note\, if you are attending as an audience member\, you consent to photos/videos being shared on our social media. If you are booking with students\, please ensure to fill out copies of our photo permission forms; these are attached with the draw\, or can be requested through competition@esu.org.  \nAudience members are permitted to arrive at 13.40 before moving into the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at 14:20 in preparation for the performances to begin at 14.30. Please arrive between 13.40-14.20. Audience members and non-competing students will not be permitted to join the tour of Shakespeare’s Globe or the acting workshop prior to the Grand Final. For those who are unable to attend live\, the event will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel via the link here.

It will be the first of a new occasional series exploring aspects of monarchy in Britain\, how it works and what are its challenges today. \nLord-lieutenant Julie Spence’s Bio: \nJulie Spence has had a long and industrious career spanning nearly four decades. In 2010 she received the Queens Police Medal\, followed in 2021 when she received the Commander of Order of St John for her services to the St John’s Ambulance and the Order of St John. Julie was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 80th Birthday honours for her management of complex and contentious organisational issues. As well as her strong leadership and determination in taking forward the Gender Agenda and the development of the British Association of Women Policing. SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: The parting of the desert- the building of the Suez Canal with Stephen Carr-Smith
DESCRIPTION:The building of the Suez Canal was both a marvel of engineering construction and the symbolic meeting of East and West. It was the vision of Ferdinand de Lesseps\, a French diplomat\, who with his enthusiasm for the project won the vital backing of Louis Napoleon\, whose perseverance overcame the British Prime Minister’s determination to prevent the Canal’s completion; and whose friendship with an 11-year-old Egyptian boy\, with a craving for spaghetti\, paid dividends. \nIt was de Lesseps’ pioneer spirit that eventually saw the project completed in 1869\, after 15 years of ceaseless effort\, both in planning and in construction.  But he did it\, and the desert was parted. \nTo book on this talk please contact Julia Tibbs and ESUSalisbury-EventsSec@esu.org and she will be able to provide further information.  \nTickets: £28 for lecture and lunch\, £12 for lecture only.

Eight teams of up to eight people will battle it out to win the top prize of the evening\, a Dartmouth House bar tab worth £60! Each team will tackle a variety of topics across different themed rounds. \nThere will be a maximum of 8 people per team. However\, you do not need a team to participate\, come along by yourself and find your team on the night. DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a talk on the history of the Music of the English Country Church at the White Hart Hotel\, hosted by Frances Howard. \n‘Music of the English Parish Church’ is a subject which brings to life a music tradition that is under the radar of most books about music. Great musical achievements do not arrive ‘oven ready’\, Handel’s Messiah or Beethoven’s 5th Symphony need singers and orchestras who can perform these works. \nFrances’ talk will show that Church music based on rational ideas\, musical modes\, language and liturgy led to the great works in England and on the continent. The recorded examples which we will hear will be in historical order with references to the Saxon churches in and around Salisbury. \nThe publication of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861 went into churches\, schools and hospitals all over the world and was a landmark in English culture. Helen’s new book ‘How to Raise a Viking\,’ will be released on 15\, February and this talk at the ESU will touch on all aspects of her book\, as well as her new lifestyle. \nAfter a decade of living in Denmark and raising a family there\, author and speaker Helen Russell noticed that Nordic children are different to children back home. They eat differently. They learn differently. They run\, jump and climb out in nature for hours a day\, even though the weather is terrible and dark from October to March. And then they grow up to be some of the happiest adults on the planet. Her question was: ‘how?’ Helen will unpack this complex question in her talk at the ESU. \nHelen will discuss the important part that oracy has played in her career and how oracy can be used to foster happiness in children\, not just in Danish societies but across the world. \nAbout Helen: \nFormerly editor of marieclaire.co.uk turned Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian\, her first book\, The Year of Living Danishly\, became an international bestseller\, and optioned for television. She’s the author of five books\, translated into 21 languages. Helen now writes for magazines and newspapers globally\, including The Times\, The Sunday Times\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, the Observer\, Grazia and Stylist. She lives in Denmark with three children and an unruly dog.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a talk on the Great Bustard\, a once-extinct population of birds in Wiltshire.  The talk will take place from 11am at the White Hart Hotel\, Salisbury \nDavid Waters’ founded the Great Bustard group in 1998 and his talk will give a brief history of the Great Bustard\, why it is important\, and how the project was undertaken. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of informative and exciting conversation with Robert Ward\, Japan Chair and Director of Geo-economics and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Robert will be discussing why geopolitics matters and providing an overview of key geopolitical issues affecting today’s world. \nThe talk will begin at 6.30pm and guests are welcome to arrive from 6pm. The talk will be followed by networking in the Dartmouth House bar. \nRoberts Bio: \nRobert Ward is the IISS Japan Chair\, carrying out independent research and writing extensively on strategic issues related to Japan\, including its contemporary security and foreign policies. He is also co-author of a book on Japan for the IISS’s Adelphi series: Japan’s Effectiveness as a Geo-economic Power. He also leads the Institute’s  Geo-economics\, Geopolitics and Strategy research programme\, which focuses on a range of issues including global economic governance\, rules and standards setting\, and how economic coercion impacts policy at a national and corporate level. \nPrior to joining the IISS in 2019\, Robert was Editorial Director at The Economist Intelligence Unit\, a sister company of The Economist Newspaper. In this capacity\, he led the EIU’s country and industry analysis and forecasting teams. He was also a member of the EIU’s Executive Committee. Robert lived and worked in Japan from 1989 to 1996\, latterly holding a position in Japan’s largest credit-rating agency\, The Japan Bond Research Institute. Margaret Cavendish may have been derided cruelly during her lifetime and have been neglected by history\, but Francesca Peacock will be bringing her back into the spotlight at this presentation for the ESU. DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a discussion on the country of Oman and its journey from medievalism to modernity with Angus Ramsay. The talk will begin at 11 am at the Mercure White Hart Hotel\, Salisbury. \nIn 1970 the world\, if it had heard of Oman at all\, expected the tiny\, wretchedly poor\, and backward Sultanate of Muscat & Oman to be taken over\, Crimea-style\, by communist revolutionaries. Post Vietnam\, communism seemed everywhere unstoppable\, and its acquisition of Oman would have given Moscow control over the vital Straits of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf.  Both the Middle East and the West would have lost abundant resources and had to develop in very different ways. \nFor ten years the Sultanate fought back\, and under a charismatic Sandhurst-trained young ruler\, it won a genuine victory and rapidly fashioned an enduring peace. Low-profile Oman is now one of the safest\, loveliest\, and friendliest of all Arab countries.
