It was the vision of Ferdinand de Lesseps\, a French diplomat\, who with his enthusiasm for the project won the vital backing of Louis Napoleon\, whose perseverance overcame the British Prime Minister’s determination to prevent the Canal’s completion; and whose friendship with an 11-year-old Egyptian boy\, with a craving for spaghetti\, paid dividends. \nIt was de Lesseps’ pioneer spirit that eventually saw the project completed in 1869\, after 15 years of ceaseless effort\, both in planning and in construction.  But he did it\, and the desert was parted. \nTo book on this talk please contact Julia Tibbs and ESUSalisbury-EventsSec@esu.org and she will be able to provide further information.  \nTickets: £28 for lecture and lunch\, £12 for lecture only. Great musical achievements do not arrive ‘oven ready’\, Handel’s Messiah or Beethoven’s 5th Symphony need singers and orchestras who can perform these works. \nFrances’ talk will show that Church music based on rational ideas\, musical modes\, language and liturgy led to the great works in England and on the continent. The recorded examples which we will hear will be in historical order with references to the Saxon churches in and around Salisbury. \nThe publication of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861 went into churches\, schools and hospitals all over the world and was a landmark in English culture. Frances will explain the links it had with the Book of Common Prayer and the search for ancient sources by the Editor. \nTo book please email Julia Tibbs at ESUSalisbury-EventsSec@esu.org. \nTickets: £28 for lecture and lunch\, £12 for lecture only. The talk will begin at 11 am at the Mercure White Hart Hotel\, Salisbury. \nIn 1970 the world\, if it had heard of Oman at all\, expected the tiny\, wretchedly poor\, and backward Sultanate of Muscat & Oman to be taken over\, Crimea-style\, by communist revolutionaries. Post Vietnam\, communism seemed everywhere unstoppable\, and its acquisition of Oman would have given Moscow control over the vital Straits of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf.  Both the Middle East and the West would have lost abundant resources and had to develop in very different ways. \nFor ten years the Sultanate fought back\, and under a charismatic Sandhurst-trained young ruler\, it won a genuine victory and rapidly fashioned an enduring peace. Low-profile Oman is now one of the safest\, loveliest\, and friendliest of all Arab countries. Angus Ramsay\, who from 1973 – 1975 led an Omani rifle company in the war-torn province of Dhofar\, charts the astonishing development of this fascinating country. \nTo book please contact Julia Tibbs at ESUSalisbury-EventsSec@esu.org. \nTickets: £28 for lecture and lunch\, £12 for lecture only. \n  URL:https://www.esu.org/event/salisbury-branch-oman-a-journey-from-medievalism-to-modernity-with-angus-ramsay/ LOCATION:White Hart Hotel\, 1 St John's Street\, Salisbury\, England\, SP1 2SD\, United Kingdom ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/oman-salisbury.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Salisbury and Wiltshire branch":MAILTO:esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20231009T101500 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20231009T150000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104015 CREATED:20230621T140735Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230626T100700Z UID:8270-1696846500-1696863600@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: The Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms with James Stopford DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, 9 October\, Salisbury and Wiltshire branch of the ESU are joined by James Stopford to hear more about the history of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms. \nThe Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms was first formed in 1509 during the turbulent years of Henry VIII to act as a mounted escort to protect the sovereign. The Corps was present as part of the King’s entourage at the Field of Cloth in 1520. The Corps last saw active service during the English Civil Wars at the Battle of Edgehill (1642). \nWe will hear more of its colourful history\, its role as The Nearest Guard and how it helped honour and say farewell to our Late Queen and stood to arms at our King’s Coronation. \nTo book your place please contact the Luncheon Secretary – Julia Tibbs. Following comments that he didn’t write many good roles for ladies\, he staged a piece about the British women in India during the second half of the Raj: \n“Called Letters from the Hen House\, it was compiled mainly from letters\, diaries and memoirs of the period. Six excellent roles for the ladies and only four men. Elements from that script together with some of the original research material form the basis of this talk. When the Colonial Administrators arrived to take over from the East India Company they were often accompanied by their wives: wives who spoke only English\, who mixed only with other wives\, and who couldn’t even communicate with their household staff. Wives who made great demands on their husbands. As one Indian wrote later ‘I don’t think they realised what a menace they were. Constructed by Warwick’s Guilds between 1385 and 1420 the Guildsmen used the grand rooms for banquets and meetings. In the reign of Elizabeth 1\, her friend Robert Dudley\, Earl of Leicester acquired the buildings from the Guilds to found his “Hospital” where twelve Brethren – soldiers who had fought for crown and country – could find a home. No one could have imagined the “Hospital” could have survived to this day with little changed. The current Master\, Heidi Meyer\, installed in November 2017 will tell you about life in this “anachronistic” institution\, both in the past and present\, why it is as important today as it was 450 years ago and what great plans are afoot for the future. \nCoffee will be served from 10.15am\, with the main talk beginning at 11am sharp\, and lunch from 12.30pm. \nLunch & Talk ticket price: £22 (Members) & £24 (Guests)\nTalk only ticket price: £10 – FREE for first-time visitors \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent to:\nESU Luncheon Secretary\, 3 Stonemasons Yard\, Salisbury SP1 2HX\nesusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org \nDirect transfers can be made to:\nBank: Coutts & Co\, 440 Strand\, London WC2R 0QS\nSort Code: 18-00-02\nAccount Name: English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth\nAccount No: 01817590\nPlease mark the transfer clearly as “SalisLunch” URL:https://www.esu.org/event/salisbury-branch-the-lord-leycester-hospital-by-dr-heidi-meyer/ LOCATION:The White Hart Hotel\, 1 St John's Street\, Salisbury\, SP1 2SD ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Heidi-Meyer-March-23.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Salisbury and Wiltshire branch":MAILTO:esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20230215T100000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20230215T140000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104015 CREATED:20220817T133916Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230124T163330Z UID:7116-1676455200-1676469600@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Salisbury branch: 'Patronage & Taste: The History of the Royal Collection' by Nicola Turner Inman DESCRIPTION:Royal Collection Trust / © His Majesty King Charles III 2023 \nNicola Turner Inman\, Curator of Decorative Arts\, will take you on a tour of one of the greatest art collections in the world and the last great European dynastic collection still in royal ownership. Isobel is a retired Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. While qualifying at St George’s Hospital\, University of London\, where Edward Wilson\, Robert Scott’s friend and confidant\, had trained some sixty-five years previously\, she saw many of Wilson’s iconic pictures of Antarctica and became fascinated by the continent and the explorers of the early 1900s. She has written several books about them and speaks regularly on Antarctic subjects and Antarctic heroes. \nSir Clements Robert Markham (1830 -1916) was an English geographer\, explorer\, and writer. He was secretary of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) between 1863 and 1888 and later served as the Society’s president for a further 12 years. In the latter capacity\, he was responsible for organising the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904\, and for launching the polar career of Robert Scott. \nCritical assessments after his death referred to the dictatorial manner in which Markham had run the RGS. In time\, questions would be raised about the accuracy of some of his writings. Markham’s writings on naval history have been criticised by modern scholars due to his nationalistic exaggeration of English sailors’ achievements. Scott remained his protégé until the former’s death in 1912 and although Markham was also a strong supporter of Shackleton\, his opposition to other Antarctic expeditions was subsequently described as “malicious”. He was criticised generally as having “an unrivalled capacity for misrepresentation\, scurrilities\, slanders and vindictiveness”! \nCoffee will be served from 10.15am\, with the main talk beginning at 11am sharp\, and lunch from 12.30pm. \nLunch & Talk ticket price: £18 (Members) & £20 (Guests)\nTalk only ticket price: £10 – FREE for first-time visitors \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent no later than Thursday\, 14 April to:\nESU Luncheon Secretary\, 3 Stonemasons Yard\, Salisbury SP1 2HX\nesusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org \nDirect transfers can be made to:\nBank: Coutts & Co\, 440 Strand\, London WC2R 0QS\nSort Code: 18-00-02\nAccount Name: English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth\nAccount No: 01817590\nPlease mark the transfer clearly as “SalisLunch” URL:https://www.esu.org/event/salisbury-and-wiltshire-branch-sir-clements-markham-rgs-success-or-failure-by-isobel-williams/ LOCATION:The White Hart Hotel\, 1 St John's Street\, Salisbury\, SP1 2SD CATEGORIES:ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/esu-branches-salisbury.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Salisbury and Wiltshire branch":MAILTO:esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20220321T101500 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20220321T140000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104015 CREATED:20220303T113955Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220317T150355Z UID:6709-1647857700-1647871200@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Salisbury and Wiltshire Branch: 'Royal Navy Hovercraft in the Falkland Islands' by Cdr Vernon Phillips RN (Retd) DESCRIPTION:‘Royal Navy Hovercraft in the Falkland Islands’ by Cdr Vernon Phillips RN (Retd) \nThe Hovercraft was a relatively new invention in 1967 when Commander Vernon Phillips was sent to the Falkland Islands to put the craft through sea trials. She has written several books about them and speaks regularly on Antarctic subjects and Antarctic heroes. \nEdward Wilson and his wife made their home in Bushey\, Hertfordshire.  When Isobel visited Bushey Museum to learn more about them\, she found the museum was more interested in their celebrity von Herkomer\, who had lived in the town for forty years. \nHerkomer was a Bavarian who became one of the most popular artists in the Victorian period in England. He painted many interesting portraits of the good and the great in England and in Boston U.S.A. He was so much accepted that he was invited to paint Queen Victoria on her death bed\, an unusual honour for a commoner and\, though a nationalized British citizen\, a German. His fall from popularity was dramatic; he died at the onset of the First World War and by the end of that war\, anti-German sentiment was rife in Britain. Also\, by this time\, appreciation of styles of painting had changed greatly with the advent of Modernism that was contrasted unfavourably with his naturalism. From 2010 to 2015\, she was Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Forced Migration at the University of Oxford. Her book ‘Syria: The Making and Unmaking of a Refuge State’ was published by Hurst & Co in 2018. \nThe mass influx of peoples into Syria over the last 150 years\, including Circassians\, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews\, Armenian\, Albanians\, Kosovars\, created a modern nation of great cultural hybridity. Until recently this was the source of its openness to contemporary waves of forced migrants including Palestinians\, Lebanese\, and Iraqis. Now\, with the tables turned\, nearly 50 per cent of Syrians have sought refuge and sanctuary among its neighbouring states. This lecture examines the history of Syria – Bilad-al-Sham – in the late Ottoman Empire and since World War One as it welcomed refugees and other uprooted peoples from across the region. \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent at least 7 days in advance to: \nMrs Louise Jeffreys\, Greenrock\, Francis Way\, Salisbury SP2 8EF \nFurther details: esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org; 01722 336118 URL:https://www.esu.org/event/salisbury-branch-syria-the-making-of-a-refuge-state-professor-dawn-chatty-fba-phd/ LOCATION:The White Hart Hotel\, 1 St John's Street\, Salisbury\, SP1 2SD CATEGORIES:ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/2020_02_19-Dawn-Chatty.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Salisbury and Wiltshire branch":MAILTO:esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20191204T101500 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20191204T150000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104015 CREATED:20190912T125938Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190912T130041Z UID:5329-1575454500-1575471600@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Salisbury & Wiltshire Branch: A Christmas Lunch with a Raffle to raise funds for the Kings School\, Tamil Nadu\, India DESCRIPTION:A Christmas Lunch with a Raffle to raise funds for the Kings School\, Tamil Nadu\, India.  \nKings School\, a boarding and day school for boys and girls\, was opened in 2005.  It is an English-medium school built to the highest international standards and our sponsorship of the School\, together with our Gap Year Student grant scheme\, is the Branch’s contribution to the teaching of English overseas.  The Talk today will be – \n“Schools I Have Known” \nMartin Marriott \nMartin was headmaster of Canford School from 1976 to 1992.  He will talk to us about a lifetime spent in education. \nLunch & Talk £18; Talk only £10 – Talk FREE for first-time visitors.  Advance booking essential.
