DESCRIPTION:Join us at Dartmouth House for a lunchtime concert by pianist\, Yulia Chaplina. \nDebuting aged seven with a performance of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in F minor with the Rostov State Symphony Orchestra\, Ms. Chaplina trained in Rostov and Moscow with Naum Shtarkman and with Klaus Hellwig at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She holds a Masters of Music from the Royal College of Music where\, in 2013\, she was appointed the Mills Williams Junior Fellow. She has performed in recitals extensively across Europe and Asia. Recent orchestral tours and engagements include the Russian Symphony Orchestra\, Berlin Sinfonietta\, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and the Moroccan National Orchestra. \nThis event is part of the 3rd London Prokofiev Festival. The programme will include works by Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninov Prokofiev\, Scriabin and Khachaturian. \nGuests are welcome to arrive from 1.30pm\, the recital will begin at 2pm sharp. \nTickets are £15 for members and £20 for guests.

DESCRIPTION:The ESU are delighted to invite you to our upcoming debate at Dartmouth House\, on Thursday\, 19 October. \nAs we increasingly rely on technology in our everyday lives\, the question of online safety becomes more pressing. How do we navigate the delicate balance between technological advancement and our personal safety? \nThe motion for this debate is: ‘This house believes that the fight for online safety is a lost cause.’ \nWe are please to announce that the speakers for this debate are: \nProposition \nFirst Speaker \nRacheal Muldoon is an internationally recognised barrister in the intersection of technology and law with deep expertise in AI and emerging technologies. Racheal has also recently been shortlisted for the Technology\, Data and Crypto Junior Barrister of the Year The Legal 500 (Legalease) 2023 Bar Awards. \n2nd Speaker \nOrhan Ahmed has a distinguished background in online safety and technology\, drawn from his career as a Fraud and Disputes Operations Manager at Monzo Bank. Additionally\, Orhan has strong debating experience as the former convener for the University of Aberdeen Debate Society. \nOpposition \nFirst speaker \nZain Hussain is a lawyer\, actor\, and treasurer of the ESU Speech and Debate Committee. Zain was the winner of the ESU’s Great Law Debate competition 2017. Zain was called to the bar earlier this year\, and decided against practicing law to build a startup focusing on improving safety for online platforms. Zain has a deep understanding of tech-enabled fraud and has academic contributions in this area. Prior to this\, Zain spent four years at Monzo Bank where he oversaw fraud prevention. He has also worked as an actor with a number of small roles across HBO\, BBC\, and Netflix productions. Zain has also co-founded a social mobility charity providing mentoring for state-school students. \nSecond Speaker \nHash Syed currently serves as a Regional Product Lead at Google\, overseeing Europe\, the Middle East\, and Africa. His career has included tenures at prominent tech companies such as Meta and Microsoft\, where he cultivated extensive experience in technology and artificial intelligence. SUMMARY:ESU Performing Shakespeare Grand Final 2019
DESCRIPTION:Description\nJoin us on Friday\, 21st June 2019 to see young people aged 11-14 from across England and Wales give a performance of their chosen speech from one of Shakespeare’s plays. \nThe Performing Shakespeare Competition is designed to allow Key Stage 3 pupils the opportunity to experience Shakespeare’s plays as they were intended – on the stage. Using theatre and performance skills to engage with the texts\, our performers bring to life some of the world’s most famous speeches in their own unique interpretations. This is definitely an event not to be missed! \nThe event will be held at Dartmouth House\, the ESU’s International Headquarters in Mayfair. Guests who are not associated with our participating schools are welcome to arrive from 1:30pm for a prompt 2pm start. The event will have finished by 5pm. \nWe are pleased to be able to offer tickets for this event free of charge and there will be an opportunity to make an donation to our charitable activities on the day. There will be tea and coffees served in the afternoon\, but lunch is not included. Please note we have finalists with severe nut allergies so please do not bring any nuts or confectionary with nuts.

The event is a friendly and informal gathering of colleagues and acquaintances designed to make new connections and bring people together in a peaceful and elegant environment. Over a mid-morning cup of coffee you will meet ESU members and their wider circle of friendship from London’s international and diplomatic communities. Our Promotions Committee Chair\, Mrs Sue Bull\, will introduce the education and cultural exchange work of the English-Speaking Union and will lead a historic tour of Dartmouth House\, host to some of the greatest international allegiances of modern times. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register so we can inform the caterers.  \n— \nAbout our Education work: \nThe English-Speaking Union was formed in the belief that more effective communication between nations would lead to improved global understanding. This belief still stands strong today. As communities become ever-more multicultural\, and society more polarised\, there has never been a greater need to understand different perspectives and opinions. While technology purports to help us with communication\, it is very much focused on the ‘broadcast’ aspects. What needs as much attention is critical engagement. Children need to learn how to listen and evaluate other points of view; how to distinguish fake news from real. They need to learn to disagree without being disagreeable\, and they need to learn that what they think and what they have to say matters. \nOur speech and debate programmes and cultural exchanges help with all these things. They improve oracy ability and academic attainment as well as a whole range of social\, emotional and interpersonal skills now seen as increasingly important by both industry and educationalists. These include self-confidence\, self-awareness\, resilience and empathy.
