Attitudes to this have changed over the last 100 years\, moving from popular pride to doubt and guilt. Our speaker is leading a 5 year project attempting to achieve a balanced assessment of empire. Is such an appraisal possible? The project has proved to be controversial\, and has raised issues of free speech and the discussion of “incorrect” views. How should we regard the British Empire and\, indeed\, other empires? Can it and they be defended? \nLuncheon meetings start at 12.30pm for 1.00pm lunch\, followed by the talk.
