DESCRIPTION:We regret that this event has been cancelled. \nJoin Devon & Exter Branch for Lunch followed by an informative talk on “The Public Service Role of the BBC in the Gathering and Broadcasting of News and Current Affairs” by Fran Unsworth. \nFrancesca Mary (“Fran”) Unsworth is a journalist and media executive. Fran began her broadcasting career in local radio\, working in Leicester and Bristol\, before becoming producer of Radio 1’s Newsbeat. In 1990 she moved to Radio 4 and was based in Washington as a radio producer for the network during the Gulf crisis of 1990–1991. She later worked as a producer on The World at One and PM. She transferred to the BBC’s Newsgathering Department in 1993\, where she was a producer and editor for the BBC One O’Clock News and the BBC Six O’Clock News. Fran was appointed Head of Newsgathering in January 2005. \nSince January 2018 she has been Director\, News & Current Affairs for BBC News. DESCRIPTION:We regret that this event has been cancelled. \nDevon & Exeter Branch’s annual Black Tie Dinner with a talk autobiographical talk from Billy “Scratch” Hitchen. \nAt the end of the Easter holidays in 1963\, Billy ‘Scratch’  Hitchen\, instead of returning to school in Salcombe\, having already been expelled by his mother\, who was the head of East Portlemouth School\, chose to run away to sea: he was just 14. Before the age of 19\, he had sailed round the world 5 times. From Cape Horn to the Indian and Pacific  Oceans; from the southerly tip of New Zealand to the North Atlantic\, from oil drilling in Argentina to pipeline construction in West Africa\, Scratch’s early life was one of challenge and freedom. \nIn 1973\, Scratch returned to Salcombe and spent the next three decades commercial fishing the coasts of the UK and other marine ventures. \nScratch will share some of his remarkable  story; of his rise from illiterate and innumerate cabin boy to skipper of the tug to steer the last of the great Cunard liners into the heart of Manhattan; from competitive sailor to commercial fisherman and proprietor of a marina. \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. DESCRIPTION:Join Devon & Exeter Branch for a lunch followed by a talk on “Principles\, Pragmatism and Politics – the making of public policy in the UK – and why it affects us all” by Professor Tony Stoller CBE. \nProfessor Stoller graduated with degrees in both history and law from Cambridge. He has had many important roles in both the private and public sectors\, including Principal Director of the John Lewis Partnership\, Chair of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Chief Executive of the Radio Authority. He is now Visiting Professor of Media and Communications at Bournemouth University and has written extensively on the broadcasting of classical music and the history of commercial radio. DESCRIPTION:Join Devon & Exeter Branch for lunch followed by a fascinating talk by Professor Richard Toye “Churchill’s Great Game”\, rethinking the origins of the Cold War \nRichard Toye is Professor of Modern History at the University of Exeter. He is a specialist in the history of rhetoric and is the author of numerous articles and several books\, including ‘Rhetoric: A Very Short Introduction’ and ‘The Roar of the Lion: The Untold Story of Churchill’s World War II Speeches’. SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Lunch & Talk on Music of the Holocaust by Professor Shirli Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary range of musical activities\, both forced and voluntary\, took place in the Nazi ghettos and camps\, from the earliest internment centres established in 1933 until the liberation in 1945. The musical works these prisoners created are extraordinary documents from the time: fragments recovered from the rubble of war and genocide; monuments to the lives that were destroyed. In this talk\, which will feature many film extracts\, Shirli Gilbert\, professor of Modern History at Southampton University with a specialism in Jewish History and particularly the Holocaust\, will highlight original music from this period\, including some rare post-war recordings. DESCRIPTION:Martin Fisher has had a lifelong interest in cinema since his grandfather took him to see ‘Pinocchio’. The title of his talk speaks for itself and will include many film extracts from those early days of cinema. \nBorn in Windsor\, Martin was educated at St George’s School\, Windsor Castle\, where he was a chorister. He sang at the funeral of King George V1\, recorded 78 rpm records for HMV and broadcast Choral Evensong for the BBC. Leaving school\, Martin joined the BBC where  he was to spend the rest of his career. He worked on such classics as Round the Horne and The Billy Cotton Band Show (21 million listeners). He became a producer on and then Head of Radio Light Entertainment. DESCRIPTION:In 1919 Lady Nancy Astor was the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons. She was MP for Plymouth until 1945. Born in the US in 1879\, in 1906 she married Lord (Waldorf) Astor\, the  owner of Clivedon. In parliament she supported social issues including the rights of women and the welfare of children. She became increasingly controversial\, for example supporting appeasement with Germany. Alexis Bowater began her journalistic career as a reporter for the Exeter Express & Echo. She moved into television to become a presenter and producer. It is just such a joy to listen to.  There is something so quintessentially English and ‘summery’ about having TMS on in the background’.  \nWith his dry wit and scholarly demeanour\, Vic Marks has been part of the TMS team for many years. Vic played cricket for Oxford\, Somerset and England before becoming a journalist and author. He writes for The Guardian and The Observer. This richly illustrated talk will tell that story. It is an extraordinary privilege to welcome Michael Mendillo to the ESU. He is professor of Astronomy at Boston University and is recognised as being one of the world leaders in his field. He has advised many organisations including NASA and lectured worldwide.
