The first screening will be Following\, directed by Christopher Nolan. Released in 1998\, the film tells the story of a young man who follows strangers around the streets of London and is drawn into a criminal underworld when he fails to keep his distance. \nAs tickets for this first screening are limited\, we encourage you to book now to secure your spot! \nFollowing the film\, attendees are warmly invited to stay until 10pm to discuss the film and socialise. \nWhat is the ESU Film Club?  \nThe Film Club will curate a mixed programme of cinema intended to spark conversation and to bring together like-minded people. \nAll money raised will go towards the operational cost of running the film club and toward the important charitable work of the English-Speaking Union (ESU). \nThe ESU is an international charitable membership organisation founded to empower young people with speaking and listening skills and cross-cultural understanding. \n

DESCRIPTION:The London Branch of the ESU is joined by best-selling author\, Charles Spicer\, who will tell us the incredible true story of the amateur intelligence agents who befriended the Nazis in the lead-up to the Second World War. \nA Telegraph History Book of the Year\, ‘Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis’ offers a rare glimpse into the motley crew who would provide the British government with better intelligence on the horrifying rise of the Nazis than anyone else. \nAbout Charles Spicer: \nCharles Spicer’s first book\, Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis was published in September 2022 by Oneworld Publications in the UK\, Pegasus Book in the US\, and worldwide on audio by Blackstone. Following a career in the City specialising in the medical sector\, he now chairs several public and private companies and a government grant-giving body. He is a warden of the Fishmongers’ Company\, deputy chair of the Royal Humane Society\, and served as High Sheriff of Greater London in 2019. Charles has a PhD in history from London University\, an MA from Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

The role of Lord-lieutenant is mirrored across the UK. Julie Spence stands in for the King at any events or duties where it is appropriate for him to be represented. It will be the first of a new occasional series exploring aspects of monarchy in Britain\, how it works and what are its challenges today. \nLord-lieutenant Julie Spence’s Bio: \nJulie Spence has had a long and industrious career spanning nearly four decades. In 2010 she received the Queens Police Medal\, followed in 2021 when she received the Commander of Order of St John for her services to the St John’s Ambulance and the Order of St John. Julie was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 80th Birthday honours for her management of complex and contentious organisational issues. As well as her strong leadership and determination in taking forward the Gender Agenda and the development of the British Association of Women Policing. Along with many other important achievements during her career. \nWe are honoured to have Julie join us for this evening of special and insightful conversation.

Eight teams of up to eight people will battle it out to win the top prize of the evening\, a Dartmouth House bar tab worth £60! Each team will tackle a variety of topics across different themed rounds. \nThere will be a maximum of 8 people per team. However\, you do not need a team to participate\, come along by yourself and find your team on the night. This event is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow members\, volunteers and friends all whilst helping to support the ESU’s vital educational programmes. \nThe Dartmouth House bar will be open from 6pm and the quiz will begin at 7 pm sharp. \nTickets are £5 for a single ticket and £40 for a team of 8.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: Music of the English Country Church with Frances Howard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a talk on the history of the Music of the English Country Church at the White Hart Hotel\, hosted by Frances Howard. \n‘Music of the English Parish Church’ is a subject which brings to life a music tradition that is under the radar of most books about music. Great musical achievements do not arrive ‘oven ready’\, Handel’s Messiah or Beethoven’s 5th Symphony need singers and orchestras who can perform these works. \nFrances’ talk will show that Church music based on rational ideas\, musical modes\, language and liturgy led to the great works in England and on the continent. The recorded examples which we will hear will be in historical order with references to the Saxon churches in and around Salisbury. \nThe publication of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861 went into churches\, schools and hospitals all over the world and was a landmark in English culture. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to be joined on Tuesday\, 5 March for an insightful evening with TedX speaker Helen Russell. Helen’s new book ‘How to Raise a Viking\,’ will be released on 15\, February and this talk at the ESU will touch on all aspects of her book\, as well as her new lifestyle. \nAfter a decade of living in Denmark and raising a family there\, author and speaker Helen Russell noticed that Nordic children are different to children back home. They eat differently. They learn differently. They run\, jump and climb out in nature for hours a day\, even though the weather is terrible and dark from October to March. And then they grow up to be some of the happiest adults on the planet. Her question was: ‘how?’ Helen will unpack this complex question in her talk at the ESU. \nHelen will discuss the important part that oracy has played in her career and how oracy can be used to foster happiness in children\, not just in Danish societies but across the world. \nAbout Helen: \nFormerly editor of marieclaire.co.uk turned Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian\, her first book\, The Year of Living Danishly\, became an international bestseller\, and optioned for television. She’s the author of five books\, translated into 21 languages. Helen now writes for magazines and newspapers globally\, including The Times\, The Sunday Times\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, the Observer\, Grazia and Stylist. She lives in Denmark with three children and an unruly dog.
