The host of the FIF moves between different ESUs internationally and each forum centres around a topic selected by the hosting nation. \nThe topic of this fourth FIF\, hosted by our Polish colleagues\, will be: ‘What motivates us to promote public speaking in our respective countries?’ \nThe ESU has always been a conduit to share and exchange views\, but within the wider international family of the ESU there is more that can be done! It is our hope that FIF will bring the international members of the ESU closer together and lead us all in exciting directions as we listen and learn from one other. \nDate: Monday\, 13 June 2022\, 1pm BST \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86471211392?pwd=MXNOR3Awa3R2OGZkUG1xTWFpcFluUT09 \nMeeting passcode: AYdPG3 \nPlease see below for a message from Alina\, Chair of ESU Poland: \nDear ESU members\, inspired by the 3rd FIF hosted by Dominga Chamorro representing Chile\, we would like you to take you to a different corner of the world\, Poland – so far away\, yet so close. \nAs is the case with the countries we have not visited\, the associations may be limited to famous people\, events or even stereotypes\, often confused with those of our neighbours. Visiting a country\, however\, often changes the perspective. Poland has always been considered a hospitable place\, but also a community in which two people may have three contradicting opinions\, according to an old joke. We have weaknesses and virtues\, but public speakers we are not. This shortcoming may result from the character of our educational system\, only now gradually shifting the main focus from knowledge to skills\, or may be rooted elsewhere. Yet\, since 1999 we have not missed an International Public Speaking Competition and our young speakers make us proud and happy. \nThe meeting to which we would like to invite you will be hosted by this year’s winner of the National Finals in Poland – Julia Smuczynska and her sister Sara\, who represented Poland at the International Public Speaking Competition in 2011 and is now one of the organizers. The question we would like to ask ourselves and each other is what motivates us to promote public speaking in our respective countries. It is also known that many children’s out-of-school lives will not provide the kinds of experience they need to develop a full repertoire of spoken language (oracy) skills. This session will focus on ways that schools and teachers can respond to those needs\, and how parents and grandparents can help. DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the purpose of debate in civil society. \nThe discussion\, chaired by Prof. James Raven\, Chair of the ESU\, will be led by our panel: Dr Katie East\, Lecturer in the History of Radical Ideas at Newcastle University; Bilal Mahmood\, ESU Governor\, senior legal consultant for China Construction Bank\, and internationally acknowledged mentor to generations of young debaters; and Christopher L. Peterson\, the Democratic candidate for the Governorship of Utah and John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah. Fittingly\, Prof. Peterson and his Republican counterpart\, Spencer Cox\, recently issued a joint TV advertisement calling for ‘Civility in debate’ especially to set an example to the young in the US. \nProfessor James Raven\, Chair of the English-Speaking Union\, says: ‘At its best\, debate should be a collaborative\, solution-focused process and yet\, in these polarised times\, public debate so often quickly descends into personal attacks or a refusal to engage. This event will examine the purpose of debate and what its rules of engagement should be. \n‘We look forward to a variety of illuminating perspectives\, from Dr East who inspires her students with positive models of debate; to Mr Mahmood who is passionate about debate as a tool of empowerment; and Professor Peterson\, who\, fresh from the campaign trail in the US\, can speak first-hand about public debate in action.’ \nThe event will be hosted on Zoom\, and there will be time for questions afterwards. \nPlease follow this link to reserve your ticket: https://why_do_we_debate.eventbrite.co.uk URL:https://www.esu.org/event/online-event-why-do-we-debate/ LOCATION:The English-Speaking Union\, 37 Charles Street\, London\, England\, W1J 5ED\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:ESU Oracy,ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/DartHouse-0066.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200123T173000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200123T193000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104357 CREATED:20191114T115245Z LAST-MODIFIED:20191114T115625Z UID:5417-1579800600-1579807800@www.esu.org SUMMARY:ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition\, Bristol Final DESCRIPTION:ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition\, Bristol Final URL:https://www.esu.org/event/esu-churchill-public-speaking-competition-bristol-final/ LOCATION:Redmaids’ High School\, Westbury Road\, Bristol\, BS9 3AW\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:ESU Oracy ORGANIZER;CN="Nigel Currie":MAILTO:nigelcurrie29@gmail.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20190621T133000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20190621T170000 DTSTAMP:20250320T104357 CREATED:20190604T114532Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190604T122525Z UID:4943-1561123800-1561136400@www.esu.org SUMMARY:ESU Performing Shakespeare Grand Final 2019 DESCRIPTION:Description\nJoin us on Friday\, 21st June 2019 to see young people aged 11-14 from across England and Wales give a performance of their chosen speech from one of Shakespeare’s plays. \nThe Performing Shakespeare Competition is designed to allow Key Stage 3 pupils the opportunity to experience Shakespeare’s plays as they were intended – on the stage.
