SUMMARY:'Red\, Black and Ignorant' - a play by Moovida
DESCRIPTION:Following a debut performance at Marseille’s Théâtre de la Mer\, Moovida Académie brings Red\, Black\, and Ignorant to Dartmouth House on 4 July. \nThis highly relevant\, dystopian play\, first performed at the Barbican in 1996\, looks at the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust with drama and sensitivity. \nIt is the fruit of a partnership that started with an English Summer School sponsored by Nick Hill’s Aix-Marseille Branch. Three years later\, with the support of the US and British Embassies in Paris\, Moovida Académie boasts a vibrant English language section. \nNassim Bouguezzi\, a Moovida alumnus with a successful TV and cinema career\, will lead the cast in London. \nAfter the performance\, we are hosting our annual Fourth of July party in honour of the ESU’s Birthday. Tickets for both the play and the party start at just £30. Please click the link below for more information. \nThe Play: \nRed\, Black and Ignorant is the first opus of the War Plays’ trilogy\, by the British playwright Edward Bond. Originally published in 1985\, during the late Cold War\, the plays bear Hiroshima’s sequels and the fear of nuclear war. Inspired by agitprop partisan theatre\, the nine acts of the play display essential aspects of life\, yet always jousting with paradoxes (Learning\, Love\, Eating\, Selling\, Working…) \nMoovida Académie: \nThis rendition of Red\, Black and Ignorant is produced by Ph’Art et Balises\, a non-profit organisation that has been based in Marseilles’ most deprived areas for 17 years. Its mission is to tackle the deficit of education in priority education zones\, which strikes even more art and culture careers: audiovisual\, cinema\, performing art and music. Each year\, Moovida Cinema and Theatre Academy assists one hundred talented young people from Marseille\, through an alternative training course on cinema\, audiovisual and performing arts careers\, that requires no degree. This project shines a light on the creative potential present in Marseille.

DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union invites you to join us at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe for the Grand Final of the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition on Friday\, 14 June. The Performing Shakespeare Competition is a chance for schools across the country to practice their oracy and drama skills. Schools have been competing in heats across the country to secure a place in the grand final at the San Wanamaker Playhouse. \nPlease note\, if you are attending as an audience member\, you consent to photos/videos being shared on our social media. If you are booking with students\, please ensure to fill out copies of our photo permission forms; these are attached with the draw\, or can be requested through competition@esu.org.  \nAudience members are permitted to arrive at 13.40 before moving into the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at 14:20 in preparation for the performances to begin at 14.30. Please arrive between 13.40-14.20. Audience members and non-competing students will not be permitted to join the tour of Shakespeare’s Globe or the acting workshop prior to the Grand Final. For those who are unable to attend live\, the event will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel via the link here.

The role of Lord-lieutenant is mirrored across the UK. Julie Spence stands in for the King at any events or duties where it is appropriate for him to be represented. It will be the first of a new occasional series exploring aspects of monarchy in Britain\, how it works and what are its challenges today. \nLord-lieutenant Julie Spence’s Bio: \nJulie Spence has had a long and industrious career spanning nearly four decades. In 2010 she received the Queens Police Medal\, followed in 2021 when she received the Commander of Order of St John for her services to the St John’s Ambulance and the Order of St John. Julie was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 80th Birthday honours for her management of complex and contentious organisational issues. As well as her strong leadership and determination in taking forward the Gender Agenda and the development of the British Association of Women Policing. Along with many other important achievements during her career. \nWe are honoured to have Julie join us for this evening of special and insightful conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Brush up on your general knowledge and join us for the annual ESU Quiz night! Eight teams of up to eight people will battle it out to win the top prize of the evening\, a Dartmouth House bar tab worth £60! Each team will tackle a variety of topics across different themed rounds. \nThere will be a maximum of 8 people per team. However\, you do not need a team to participate\, come along by yourself and find your team on the night. This event is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow members\, volunteers and friends all whilst helping to support the ESU’s vital educational programmes. \nThe Dartmouth House bar will be open from 6pm and the quiz will begin at 7 pm sharp. \nTickets are £5 for a single ticket and £40 for a team of 8.

Helen’s new book ‘How to Raise a Viking\,’ will be released on 15\, February and this talk at the ESU will touch on all aspects of her book\, as well as her new lifestyle. \nAfter a decade of living in Denmark and raising a family there\, author and speaker Helen Russell noticed that Nordic children are different to children back home. They eat differently. They learn differently. They run\, jump and climb out in nature for hours a day\, even though the weather is terrible and dark from October to March. And then they grow up to be some of the happiest adults on the planet. Her question was: ‘how?’ Helen will unpack this complex question in her talk at the ESU. \nHelen will discuss the important part that oracy has played in her career and how oracy can be used to foster happiness in children\, not just in Danish societies but across the world. \nAbout Helen: \nFormerly editor of marieclaire.co.uk turned Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian\, her first book\, The Year of Living Danishly\, became an international bestseller\, and optioned for television. She’s the author of five books\, translated into 21 languages. Helen now writes for magazines and newspapers globally\, including The Times\, The Sunday Times\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, the Observer\, Grazia and Stylist. She lives in Denmark with three children and an unruly dog.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of informative and exciting conversation with Robert Ward\, Japan Chair and Director of Geo-economics and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Robert will be discussing why geopolitics matters and providing an overview of key geopolitical issues affecting today’s world. \nThe talk will begin at 6.30pm and guests are welcome to arrive from 6pm. The talk will be followed by networking in the Dartmouth House bar. \nRoberts Bio: \nRobert Ward is the IISS Japan Chair\, carrying out independent research and writing extensively on strategic issues related to Japan\, including its contemporary security and foreign policies. He is also co-author of a book on Japan for the IISS’s Adelphi series: Japan’s Effectiveness as a Geo-economic Power. He also leads the Institute’s  Geo-economics\, Geopolitics and Strategy research programme\, which focuses on a range of issues including global economic governance\, rules and standards setting\, and how economic coercion impacts policy at a national and corporate level. \nPrior to joining the IISS in 2019\, Robert was Editorial Director at The Economist Intelligence Unit\, a sister company of The Economist Newspaper. In this capacity\, he led the EIU’s country and industry analysis and forecasting teams. He was also a member of the EIU’s Executive Committee. Robert lived and worked in Japan from 1989 to 1996\, latterly holding a position in Japan’s largest credit-rating agency\, The Japan Bond Research Institute. DESCRIPTION:Join Salisbury branch for an interesting lecture with Rupert Wieloch \nThe Salisbury branch of the ESU invites you to a lecture with Rupert Wieloch to learn more about Churchill’s Abandoned Prisoners. \nOne hundred years ago a group of fifteen British soldiers serving with the British Mission to Siberia were captured by the Red Army on Russian Christmas Eve (6th January). They were held in a lice-infested room at Krasnoyarsk for three months\, whilst Prime Minister Lloyd George’s representative signed a prisoner exchange treaty with Lenin’s envoy in Copenhagen. One of the prisoners was a young Captain Brian Horrocks (played by Edward Fox in the film A Bridge Too Far)\, who succumbed to epidemic typhus\, but was saved by his best friend who nursed him through the illness. Another captive\, Francis McCullagh\, was the only western correspondent to interview the Tsar’s assassin. In March\, the prisoners were escorted to Irkutsk where a British train arrived to pick them up\, but the Bolshevik authorities only allowed the women and children to leave and sent the despondent soldiers 3\,500 miles to hateful prisons in Moscow. \nIn his talk at the English-Speaking Union\, Rupert Wieloch will describe how the soldiers maintained morale and coped with their fearsome ordeal and explain what the War Secretary\, Winston Churchill\, did to secure their protracted release and how their incarceration became a ’cause célèbre’ in the House of Commons. Rupert was educated at Winston Churchill’s alma mater and completed a Fellowship in International Relations at Pembroke College\, Cambridge during a 35 year career in the British Army. His extensive research includes a treasure-trove of unpublished document\, as well as archives from Philadelphia\, London\, St Petersburg and Oxford and the testimony from the families of some of the prisoners. \nTo book your place please contact the Luncheon Secretary – Julia Tibbs. SUMMARY:Piano Recital with Yulia Chaplina
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Dartmouth House for a lunchtime concert by pianist\, Yulia Chaplina. \nDebuting aged seven with a performance of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in F minor with the Rostov State Symphony Orchestra\, Ms. Chaplina trained in Rostov and Moscow with Naum Shtarkman and with Klaus Hellwig at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She holds a Masters of Music from the Royal College of Music where\, in 2013\, she was appointed the Mills Williams Junior Fellow. She has performed in recitals extensively across Europe and Asia. Recent orchestral tours and engagements include the Russian Symphony Orchestra\, Berlin Sinfonietta\, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and the Moroccan National Orchestra. \nThis event is part of the 3rd London Prokofiev Festival. The programme will include works by Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninov Prokofiev\, Scriabin and Khachaturian. \nGuests are welcome to arrive from 1.30pm\, the recital will begin at 2pm sharp. \nTickets are £15 for members and £20 for guests.
