DESCRIPTION:Brush up on your general knowledge and join us for the annual ESU Quiz night! Eight teams of up to eight people will battle it out to win the top prize of the evening\, a Dartmouth House bar tab worth £60! Each team will tackle a variety of topics across different themed rounds. \nThere will be a maximum of 8 people per team. However\, you do not need a team to participate\, come along by yourself and find your team on the night. This event is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow members\, volunteers and friends all whilst helping to support the ESU’s vital educational programmes. \nThe Dartmouth House bar will be open from 6pm and the quiz will begin at 7 pm sharp. \nTickets are £5 for a single ticket and £40 for a team of 8.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: Music of the English Country Church with Frances Howard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a talk on the history of the Music of the English Country Church at the White Hart Hotel\, hosted by Frances Howard. \n‘Music of the English Parish Church’ is a subject which brings to life a music tradition that is under the radar of most books about music. Great musical achievements do not arrive ‘oven ready’\, Handel’s Messiah or Beethoven’s 5th Symphony need singers and orchestras who can perform these works. \nFrances’ talk will show that Church music based on rational ideas\, musical modes\, language and liturgy led to the great works in England and on the continent. The recorded examples which we will hear will be in historical order with references to the Saxon churches in and around Salisbury. \nThe publication of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861 went into churches\, schools and hospitals all over the world and was a landmark in English culture. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to be joined on Tuesday\, 5 March for an insightful evening with TedX speaker Helen Russell. Helen’s new book ‘How to Raise a Viking\,’ will be released on 15\, February and this talk at the ESU will touch on all aspects of her book\, as well as her new lifestyle. \nAfter a decade of living in Denmark and raising a family there\, author and speaker Helen Russell noticed that Nordic children are different to children back home. They eat differently. They learn differently. They run\, jump and climb out in nature for hours a day\, even though the weather is terrible and dark from October to March. And then they grow up to be some of the happiest adults on the planet. Her question was: ‘how?’ Helen will unpack this complex question in her talk at the ESU. \nHelen will discuss the important part that oracy has played in her career and how oracy can be used to foster happiness in children\, not just in Danish societies but across the world. \nAbout Helen: \nFormerly editor of marieclaire.co.uk turned Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian\, her first book\, The Year of Living Danishly\, became an international bestseller\, and optioned for television. She’s the author of five books\, translated into 21 languages. Helen now writes for magazines and newspapers globally\, including The Times\, The Sunday Times\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, the Observer\, Grazia and Stylist. She lives in Denmark with three children and an unruly dog.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Dartmouth House for a lunchtime concert by pianist\, Yulia Chaplina. \nDebuting aged seven with a performance of Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in F minor with the Rostov State Symphony Orchestra\, Ms. Chaplina trained in Rostov and Moscow with Naum Shtarkman and with Klaus Hellwig at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She holds a Masters of Music from the Royal College of Music where\, in 2013\, she was appointed the Mills Williams Junior Fellow. She has performed in recitals extensively across Europe and Asia. Recent orchestral tours and engagements include the Russian Symphony Orchestra\, Berlin Sinfonietta\, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and the Moroccan National Orchestra. \nThis event is part of the 3rd London Prokofiev Festival. The programme will include works by Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninov Prokofiev\, Scriabin and Khachaturian. \nGuests are welcome to arrive from 1.30pm\, the recital will begin at 2pm sharp. \nTickets are £15 for members and £20 for guests.

DESCRIPTION:In 2021 Salisbury Civic Society asked Paul Hooley to unveil a Blue Plaque at the former home of Wolfe Frank in Mere\, Wiltshire. Salisbury and Wiltshire branch will be joined by Paul Hooley to discuss Wolfe Frank as part of their lecture series. \nInvolved in proceedings from the start of the Nuremberg war crimes trials\, Wolfe Frank interpreted the judge’s opening statements and announced the sentences to the Nazi war criminals. From manuscripts found 25 years following his death\, we will learn more about this unique man – engineer\, resistance worker\, ‘an enemy of Germany’\, a former Captain in the British Army\, playboy\, risk taker and a man of immense courage\, integrity\, ability and good manners. Emmanuel has played concertos including Brahms\, Mendelssohn\, Paganini No.1 and Tchaikovsky. DESCRIPTION:Ian Clarke is an organist and musical director of the acclaimed chamber choir the Swarbrick Singers\, as well as member of the panel of Examiners for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music. \nThe choir was formed in 1983 while Ian was the organist of All Saints’ Church\, Northampton. The organ at the church was built by Thomas Swarbrick\, an 18th century builder and the original case is still there — hence the name. They sing music both sacred and secular from all periods of time at all types of events. DESCRIPTION:‘The Women of the Raj’ by Brian Freeland \nBrian Freeland has written a dozen stage scripts (nine produced so far\, four of them published). Following comments that he didn’t write many good roles for ladies\, he staged a piece about the British women in India during the second half of the Raj: \n“Called Letters from the Hen House\, it was compiled mainly from letters\, diaries and memoirs of the period. Six excellent roles for the ladies and only four men. Elements from that script together with some of the original research material form the basis of this talk. When the Colonial Administrators arrived to take over from the East India Company they were often accompanied by their wives: wives who spoke only English\, who mixed only with other wives\, and who couldn’t even communicate with their household staff. Wives who made great demands on their husbands. As one Indian wrote later ‘I don’t think they realised what a menace they were.
