The Owen Paterson affair is just one example of behaviour which is at odds with the public view of what is acceptable by our politicians. Is Westminster out of touch with the people? How are these decisions taken? Is the system of Governance fit for purpose? \nJoin the Lincolnshire Branch on Zoom for an intimate insiders’ conversation with  Viscount Hailsham\, Baroness Hogg and Lord Cormack to consider the current status in context and with a longer view than much coverage often allows.  Viscount Hailsham served as a Government Minister\, Baroness Hogg held a prestigious post at No 10 and Lord Cormack is a renowned Parliamentarian; they live in Lincolnshire and are strong supporters of the ESU. They will not only help us understand better how Government and Parliament works but also bring great experience to answering some of these questions which will be put to them by ESU committee member John Raine CMG OBE\, himself familiar with the Westminster scene. \nWe hope you will join us; if so\, do please register with Camilla Carlbom Flinn for log in details: camilla.carlbom@carlbom.co.uk. \nBaroness Hogg\nSarah Hogg was Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit in No. 10 Downing Street from 1990 to 1995\, and in 2002 become the first woman to chair a company in the FTSE 100 (3i Group). DESCRIPTION:Exploring the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views\, Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. She will be joined by Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nEvent summary:\n‘Are some born to be better and more civil public speakers?’ Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. \nHannah explores the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views. Numerous scholars are now investigating how the different profiles of brains are associated with different ideologies. It is claimed that the brains of those with very conservative views have a much larger volume and a much more sensitive amygdala – the area of the brain that is involved in perceptions of fear. Those of more liberal inclination seem to have a greater weighting on the region of the brain that is engaged with future planning and more collaborative endeavour. Liberals look to the future and seem less sensitive to immediate threats. This leads to questions about how neuroscience might affect how we change our minds and go about winning an argument. The study has\, therefore\, key implications for those working on questions of civility\, persuasiveness\, and divisiveness in public discourse\, suggesting that the way in which we build up perceptions of the world strengthens the way in which we ignore contrary views and evidence. \nA discussion will follow led by our distinguished panel guests Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nChaired by ESU Chair\, Professor James Raven\, the debate and Q&A session will take place via Zoom on Wednesday\, 23 September at 7.30pm (BST). \nReserve your ticket here: https://civilpublicspeakers.eventbrite.co.uk \n  \n  \n  URL:https://www.esu.org/event/online-event-are-some-born-to-be-better-and-more-civil-public-speakers/ LOCATION:Zoom Webinar CATEGORIES:ESU Education,ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Exterior-of-Dartmouth-House-copy-scaled.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20200723T193000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20200723T210000 DTSTAMP:20250320T110632 CREATED:20200714T203935Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200716T190949Z UID:6013-1595532600-1595538000@www.esu.org SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT: THE INCIVILITY PROBLEM - HAS SOCIAL MEDIA MADE CONVERSATION LESS CIVIL? DESCRIPTION:Most of us think that new media have made public discussion and pronouncements less civil. Is this true and if so what are the consequences for public debate and communication?  Do please join us online on Thursday\, 23 July at 7.30pm BST for the first in a series of events in which a distinguished panel will share their thoughts on the issues at hand. \nThe event will open with a short presentation from Texas by Prof. Emily Sydnor\, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Southwestern University and author of Disrespectful Democracy: The Psychology of Political Incivility. \nShe writes: ‘research demonstrates that negativity and rudeness in politics have been increasing for decades. But how does this tide of impolite-to-outrageous language affect our reactions to media coverage and our political behaviour?’ She argues that ‘citizens now need to be able to tolerate or even welcome incivility in the public sphere in order to participate in the democratic process. Yet individuals who are turned off by incivility are not brought back in by civil presentation of issues.’ \nThe discussion\, chaired by Prof. James Raven\, Chair of the ESU\, will be led by our panel: Teresa Bejan\, Associate Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford and author of Mere Civility: Disagreement and the Limits of Toleration\, and David Howarth\, Professor of Law and Public Policy at the University of Cambridge\, former MP for Cambridge\, and former Electoral Commissioner. \nA donation of £10 per person is suggested. \nReserve your space here:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-incivility-problem-tickets-113559678054 URL:https://www.esu.org/event/online-event-the-incivility-problem-has-social-media-made-conversation-less-civil/ LOCATION:Zoom Webinar CATEGORIES:ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/DHcrop.jpg END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
