The house itself was featured in the Narnia books and Lewis’s gardener at The Kilns\, Fred Paxford\, is said to have inspired the character of Puddlegium the Marshwiggle in The Silver Chair. \nThe Kilns was built in 1922 on the site of a former brickworks as bought by CS Lewis\, his brother Warren Lewis\, and Janie Moore. Maureen Dunbar\, Janie Moore’s daughter\, also lived there. CS Lewis wrote of the house: ‘I never hoped for the like’. Janie Moore was the mother of Lewis’s university friend Paddy Moore\, who had been killed in the First World War. \nThe house is in what is now called Lewis Close\, south of Kiln Lane. The Kilns is currently owned and operated by the CS Lewis Foundation\, which runs it as the Study Centre at the Kilns. \nThe CS Lewis Foundation is a not-for-profit and a registered charity in the U.K. www.cslewis.org \nThe optional lunch will be held at the Talk House\, Stanton St John. He studied as an undergraduate and graduate at University College\, Oxford\, and was a Visiting Fellow at the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello. He has held research and teaching positions at St Peter’s College\, and within the History Faculty. His doctoral work focused on the use made of classical antiquity by Jefferson’s generation\, and he retains a strong interest in the reception of classical antiquity in the modern world\, about which he has written extensively. He supervises undergraduate and graduate theses on early American politics and ideology and the history of ideas. \nThe menu will be traditional turkey lunch with vegetarian option\, a predinner drink and coffee afterwards\, water at the table. CR Ashbee was impressed when he visited Rodmarton in 1914 and he wrote “I’ve seen no modern work to equal it\, nothing I know of Lutyens or Baker comes up to it. And when I ask why I find the answer in the system\, the method rather than the man. It is a house built on the basis not of contract but of confidence\, and Barnsley has been allowed a free hand to put all his personal knowledge and techniques into the work. The English Arts and Crafts Movement at its best is here – so are the vanishing Traditions of the Cotswolds”. \nDirections:\nRodmarton Manor is off the A433 between Cirencester and Tetbury. If approaching from the Stroud direction turn off the A419 at Jolly Nice/Frampton Mansell junction. Please note this is a narrow lane unsuitable for coaches\, which should head to Cirencester and approach via A433. \nMeet at 1.45pm for 2pm tour of the house\, followed by a walk around the garden. Tea and cake will be served at 4.45 pm.\nFurther details see: Rodmarton Manor. \nPlease send your cheques paid to ESU to Dr Jan Carter:\nPaddock Cottage\nThrupp\nOxon OX5 1JY\n01865 848528\nESU charity reg no: 273136 \nOr pay via BACS:\nCoutts &Co\, a/c 01817590\, sort 18-00-02\, \nPlease inform Dr Carter (jan@paddockcottage.net) if you wish to attend. \n  URL:https://www.esu.org/event/oxfordshire-branch-guided-tour-of-rodmarton-manor/ LOCATION:rodmarton manor\, Rodmarton Manor\, Cirencester\, Gloucestershire\, GL7 6PF\, United Kingdom CATEGORIES:ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Rodmarton-manor.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Oxford Branch":MAILTO:jan@paddockcottage.net END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20220530T190000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20220530T220000 DTSTAMP:20250320T112345 CREATED:20220405T135324Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220405T140808Z UID:6778-1653937200-1653948000@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Oxfordshire Branch: 100 Year Anniversary Fundraising Dinner DESCRIPTION:Exactly 100 years ago on 30th May at Oriel College Oxford\, the Oxfordshire Branch of the ESU was formed. It was a centre of opposition to Charles I and was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. Broughton Castle is home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye & Sele\, whose family name is Fiennes. \nThe ownership of the Castle has remained in the same family since 1447. Sir Thomas Wykeham was granted a “license to crenellate” in 1406 and these fortifications – gatehouse\, moat and the battlements of the curtain wall – are the result. Sir Thomas had inherited Broughton Castle from his great uncle William of Wykeham\, the founder of New College\, Oxford and Winchester College who bought Broughton Castle in 1377. Their descendants still live in the Castle. \nEvent information: \nWe will meet in the car park at about 1.50. \nBroughton Castle is 2.5 miles from the centre of Banbury\, 3 miles from Junction 11 of the M40. \nAt Banbury Cross take the B4035 west signposted to Shipston on Stour then\, after about two miles\, turn right in Broughton village at the crossroads by the Saye & Sele Arms pub. At the bottom of the hill turn left into the drive.  The car park is on your left before the Church. \nPlease note that all public toilets are in the main building in the car park – there are none available at the Castle. \nThe Saye & Sele Arms pub in the village serves lunches. \nwww.sayeandselearms.co.uk \n  \n  URL:https://www.esu.org/event/oxfordshire-branch-visit-to-broughton-castle/ LOCATION:Oxfordshire\, Oxfordshire CATEGORIES:ESU Social ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.esu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/broughton-castke.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="Oxford Branch":MAILTO:jan@paddockcottage.net END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20190713T190000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20190713T220000 DTSTAMP:20250320T112345 CREATED:20190701T221551Z LAST-MODIFIED:20190702T161651Z UID:5128-1563044400-1563055200@www.esu.org SUMMARY:Oxford Branch: Annual Dinner Black Tie DESCRIPTION:Oxford Branch Annual Dinner Black Tie at Oriel College with guest speaker: Tim O’Mara\, TV Drama director\, Winner Academy TV Award for drama.( http://www.timomara.co.uk/) URL:https://www.esu.org/event/oxford-branch-annual-dinner-black-tie/ LOCATION:Oriel College\, Oxford\, OX1 3BJ CATEGORIES:ESU Social ORGANIZER;CN="Oxford Branch":MAILTO:jan@paddockcottage.net END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
