DESCRIPTION:The Salisbury Branch is joined by Gary Price for a lecture on his career and the Salisbury Cathedral. \nOverview: \nGary Price started work at Salisbury Cathedral in 1986 as a stone sawyer\, four years later he became Head of Stone Sawyer. In 2012 he became Clerk of Works and has been instrumental in launching the Sponsor a Stone Scheme. We sponsor educational projects in schools in areas of deprivation and hold school competitions in debating\, public speaking and drama performance\, with volunteer judges drawn from our membership. We also host social events at Dartmouth House\, including author talks\, a film club\, and quiz evenings. The London Branch is the ESU’s largest membership branch in the UK with members of all ages and of many different backgrounds.

DESCRIPTION:The London Branch of the ESU is joined by best-selling author\, Charles Spicer\, who will tell us the incredible true story of the amateur intelligence agents who befriended the Nazis in the lead-up to the Second World War. \nA Telegraph History Book of the Year\, ‘Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis’ offers a rare glimpse into the motley crew who would provide the British government with better intelligence on the horrifying rise of the Nazis than anyone else. \nAbout Charles Spicer: \nCharles Spicer’s first book\, Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis was published in September 2022 by Oneworld Publications in the UK\, Pegasus Book in the US\, and worldwide on audio by Blackstone. Following a career in the City specialising in the medical sector\, he now chairs several public and private companies and a government grant-giving body. He is a warden of the Fishmongers’ Company\, deputy chair of the Royal Humane Society\, and served as High Sheriff of Greater London in 2019. Charles has a PhD in history from London University\, an MA from Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
